Quick Forecast

I'll be heading north to target SE CO and SW KS where pretty good vertical wind profiles and instabilities will support a supercell or two up there. Already some nice bubbling Cu in SE CO with westerly flow steering storms into a progressively better environment. Will update on Tailcaster (link to right) from the road starting about 3pm.

Been having the same problem with GR3 here too. Its not the program but the NWS office feed in our case. I have seen it before and it clears up, most of the time. Still, it is very frustrating to have it happen when you need it and need it in a hurry!

Thats why I use Allison House for my feed. $10 a month but well worth it. Never had any lag issues except connection :). As long as I have connection I get my updates on time plus a few extras that arent with the regular feed like satellite and lightning.

I have pretty much written off using GR3. It works great at home when watching all the storms out in the Tx panhandle but once I go out to chase the garbage here in Oklahoma it will work for a while while I am in EDVO coverage but after that it is done. I always have a connection and can send video and even pull down updated weather service radar pages but GR is either saying "waiting", "retrying" or is showing that it is updating but the radar times are always way behind. I tried 2 different aircards and encountered the same problems. I recently installed a patch that was supposed to fix this but it does not seem to have helped at all, just glad I kept my XM unit.

I tell ya, I was about to chunk it out the window yesterday. I also had a terrible problem with it on June 2. I am abit tired of the "waiting" or "retrying in 0:23" message. It's totally ridiculous.

The worst thing is that sometimes, it says it downloaded and you get "update in 8:00" and yet...nothing downloaded. It tries to fool you. LOL!! I mean, c'mon, it either updated or it didn't.

As a programmer, I suspect there is something wrong with the script that grabs the data. I thought it was just a simple "grab most recent file and don't stop until you do" code.

Apparently it's more complex than that. It shouldn't be. I think it "times" out or gets confused when it has to wait on something else that is accessing the internet. I've confirmed this by turning everything else off, and it sometimes makes a difference.

The most frustrating part as Charles pointed out is that my internet connection is just fine. I can download and upload stuff left and right. And, EVERYTHING else on GR3 (warnings, surface plots, watches, SN, etc) works just fine. It is ONLY the radar images.

It's abit late in the season to try this, but next yeasr, I'll do the Allison House feeds like Jay suggested. He says he doesn't have a problem. It that fixes it, then I'll be a happy camper.

If not, I'll be looking seriously at SwiftWx. If they had an actual demo version of their software instead of a castrated version, I'd seriousy test drive it. As it stands, I personally think the current demo version sucks. I ain't paying $180 or whatever it is until I can really test drive it first...or find somebody that has a full version and let me play around with it. It looks good in the brochure..... ;-)
