Driest Winter In Texas....Ever

For those out there that still don't understand how serious the drought is in Texas, NOAA recently announced that Texas has experienced its driest winter....EVER!

http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2009/20090310_winterstats.html

"The United States experienced its fifth driest December-February period on record. Texas had its driest winter ever and the Southeast experienced its 10th driest winter."

Nationally, "The December 2008 – February 2009 average temperature was 33.49 degrees F, which is 0.53 degree F above normal."

"January-February 2009 was the driest, first two month-period in the 1895-2009 record for the contiguous United States."

Fortunately for my home state, some beneficial rainfall is in the cards for this week and weekend including the panhandle. "Desperate" is a bit of an understatement at this point. I haven't had a chance to research it and probably won't, but I have to think that this is the worst drought for the state since the dust bowl days. We are certainly headed that direction unless the upper air pattern undergoes a major change soon.

For Amarillo, this winter is in second place in the record books for the least snowfall amounts. Average is nearly 17 inches and we've had about 1.5 inches. We've also had the 6th warmest February ever. I'm trying to find out the overall winter climatology for 2008/2009 and compare it to the record books. We really haven't had much of a winter at all.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming weather system this week!

Maybe we can cure this dry winter in the next few days. I sure hope it happens, but I'm not betting the house on it just yet.
